Baby Skin Care Product Tips
A newborn baby's skin is very delicate and may be sensitive, so it is important to be careful with the baby skin care products you choose to use for your baby.
Many products on the market today are specially formulated for use on babies. They usually contain mild ingredients, which means there is less likelihood of rash or other skin irritations.
It isn't uncommon for infants to experience skin irritations such as eczema or cradle cap. Every child is different, so it may be a good idea to look closely at the product you're using.
Laundry detergent can cause problems for some children. Try to choose a gentle one that can be used specifically for the baby's clothing and diapers. Also, if your washing machine has the option of a second rinse cycle, use that when washing your baby's clothing, bedding, washcloths, towels or diapers to ensure that all detergent residue has been removed.
The very fabric from which the child's clothing is made could be the cause for skin irritations too. Cotton is almost always the perfect choice for clothing, towels and sheets that come into direct contact with the baby's skin.
A clean, dry baby is a happy baby! Also, if a child is changed on a regular basis and kept clean and dry, he will be less likely to experience troubles with
diaper rash.
If, however, your baby develops a rash or other skin irritation, there are several safe and gentle products that can help your child (and you!) through these uncomfortable times.
Keep in mind that every child could react differently to the same product, so don't be surprised if one child responds well to a certain brand of a product, but your other child has an adverse reaction to it. You may have to try a few products before finding one that works well and solves the skin irritation problem.
Some babies have particularly sensitive skin and may react to the detergent used on reusable diapers. Disposable diapers may be a better choice when it comes to your child.
A baby's bedding should be washed and cleaned on a regular basis. Always change the sheets and mattress pad if there is an accident in order to prevent mold or other bacterial problems. Sometimes, dampness on crib sheets can be cause for skin irritations and, breathing difficulties in some children.
It's an ideal environment for the baby if the baby's room is clean and free of dust, dampness and has good air flow.
Some manufacturers of baby care products are not as concerned with the children they are treating, but rather about their profits. So, it may surprise you that several of the baby care products on the market today contain ingredients known to actually cause skin irritations, allergies and sometimes, breathing difficulties. Some of those ingredients might include fragrances and colorants that enhance the smell and look of the product, which means it will sell more often. Marketing companies know what sell and will add these things to even baby skin care to boost their bottom line.
If you believe that the eczema or skin rash is the reason your child is discontent and crying often, stop using the product immediately and give the skin a few days to recover. If you see a big change in your baby's skin and behavior, discontinue using that particular product right away and try to find one that is gentler on your baby's skin.
It is always a good idea to read the ingredients on the package prior to purchasing it for your baby. Chemicals with long names and colors could both cause skin problems in infants. Organic baby skin care products usually contain natural ingredients and are less likely to cause skin irritations or other health problems for your baby. However, make sure when reading the label that the ingredients are truly healthy and additional ingredients haven't been added as fillers.
If you are truly ambitious, you could make your own baby skin care products. However, most mothers don't have the extra time and energy to do so. Simply take the time to conduct research on the ingredients in the baby skin care products you like and then take your time selecting one. Don't be afraid to ask other moms for recommendations and always keep a close eye on your child's skin for any changes.
