Baby will give off non-verbal hints that they are ready, but there are a few indicators that mom can look for.

Children go through growth spurts at all ages. They may seem more enthusiastic at meal times, but that doesn’t mean that he or she is ready for the next step. Watch them for a short time to see if their increased appetite is consistent.

Most authorities agree, infants can begin solid foods between four and six months of age. This is not a hard and fast rule however. Here are some signs that may indicate a change in diet is indicated.

Head control must be well developed. This will allow the infant to sit with support and purposely turn their head away to purposely communicate disinterest in the food choice.

To be able to swallow something thicker than human milk or formula, babies must be able to hold up their heads. Also, without proper head control, choking may occur when eating.

The extrusion reflex is an innate (born with) ability push things out of their mouth. When you start feeding them with a nipple, they shove their tongue out when opening their mouths. This protects baby from choking. This reflex must overcome in order to eat solid foods.

Four months old may not be right for you situation, if they continue to push things out of their mouth, wait just a little bit longer for the reflex to diminish.

Chewing pushes food towards the back of the mouth where it heads down to the stomach after swallowing. Chewing motions are a good indicator that solid foods are on the horizon.

If the six month milestone is approaching and they are not eating solid foods, please be patient. Increase milk feedings to fight the increased appetite.

When the time is right for a change you will know. Advancing their diet is not a precise science and keep in mind your baby is different from everyone else’s

It is time for solid baby food!

In Summary, these are some things to look for:

They no longer display the tongue-poke reflex

They are able to hold their head unsupported

They watch you eat with interest

They indicate, through gestures and sounds, their interest in whatever it is you're eating.
