Should you use organic baby care products?

You may wonder why you should worry about using organic baby care products on your new child. After all, how much can a baby care product hurt a tiny baby? They’re supposed to be gentle, right?

Take a look at the list of ingredients on your typical bottle of baby shampoo or diaper cream. Do you know what all those ingredients are? Of course you don’t. The vast majority of us have no idea what sodium lauryl sulfate is, let alone what it does. All the more reason to look at organic baby care products. Imagine reading the ingredients list and actually knowing what those ingredients are!

Now consider your little child. See how small they are… pound for pound, they are exposed to a higher concentration of chemicals, toxins and pollutants than we are just because of their size. When exposed to commercial baby care products, they are exposed to petroleum products, preservatives and all sorts of nasty chemicals applied directly to their skin. Anything put on the skin has been at least partially absorbed into the body within fifteen minutes. Now, how about considering those organic baby care products?

What, besides peace of mind, can organic baby products offer you? Newborn babies need very little… maybe a little natural balm for drying skin . A product containing natural lanolin and little else can do wonders. Similar in many ways to the vernix that protected your baby’s skin in utero, lanolin is a wonderful natural ingredient. Other natural organic ingredients may include essential oils, shea butter, herbs and olive oil. As baby grows a bit older, they will need more supplies… shampoo, diaper rash cream , gentle soaps… each child develops in their individual way, and some may end up messier than others, requiring more cleaning. Choose only the products you will use.

There are many places to get organic baby care products. Some stores sell them, especially if they tend to specialize in organic foods. You can also find them at local artisan markets, some high end maternity and baby shops, and of course, online. The benefit of getting your organic baby products near home is that many places will have testers available, so you can try them out on your own skin. When buying organic baby products online, you need to rely on the reputation of the business. See if they list the ingredients for each product… if not, why don’t they? Are they trying to hide something? By looking at the ingredient list, you should have an idea of what the product may be like.

Using organic baby care products will protect your baby from possible chemical sensitivities later in life by lessening her exposure to them right from the start. More and more people are developing these sensitivities because we are constantly being exposed to them in every aspect of our life, from body care products to cleaning products… even in our food.

So take a few moments to explore the possibilities of using organic products. If you haven’t thought about it before, it may open your eyes to a world of chemical exposure you may want to avoid.
