Mar 16, 2008, Baby Bedding
It is important that you choose baby bedding that is not only attractive but is also safe for your baby and this is determined by the materials that the bedding is made out of.
Contrary to what a lot of people believe there can be considerable differences in the quality and safety of bedding even though there are strict regulations in place to determine whether bedding is safe or not.
Often the lower quality baby bedding products that are sourced from some overseas countries aren't up to a suitable standard to ensure that your baby is going to be safe at all times.
While the authorities try to regulate against the introduction of materials that could be detrimental to your child's health there have been many occasions over recent years where products such as baby bedding and other baby related products have proven to be unsafe even after they have been on the market for some time.
It is usually best to buy from reputable stores where they try to maintain a good level of quality with all their products and only sell child care products and baby bedding where they know that they have been tested for safety including such things as flammability and also for other factors such as ensuring that the fibers don't irritate your child or get inhaled.
There is also the concern that some products are made of materials or have dyes and colours that could affect your child's health.
Many more manufacturers are using natural fibres in their products these days that are less likely to cause allergic reactions to the sensitive skin of young babies.
Natural fibres often allow your baby's skin to breathe a lot better while they are sleeping as opposed to synthetic products and that is another reason why more and more people are choosing natural bedding products rather than their synthetic counterparts.
The size and the design of the bedding can also improve safety by allowing you to be able to tuck in the corners of the bedding insuring that it doesn't get wrapped around your child especially once they get little bit older and start moving about in the bed.
Mar 3, 2008, Stress and Time Management for a New Parent
Holding your baby is one of the most important
aspects in its development as it creates a bond
of security trust and reassurance. Nothing in the
world can replace the comforting arms of a mother
or father for a baby.
Initially your baby will have very little
strength in its neck and will not be able to
support the weight of its head so you will need
to offer this support when you or anyone else
holds your baby.
If other children in your family want to hold the
newborn they will need to be made aware of this
so they can offer support too.
Children should be taught to be very careful and
everyone should handle the baby with the utmost
care by keeping movements slow and smooth whilst
still offering sufficient support.
If young children are cuddling the baby it is
safest if they are holding them over a soft
surface such as your bed and you should never
leave them alone even for an instant.
Men are generally a little anxious to hold a baby
as they fear they could do some damage to
something so delicate however a baby will feel
secure if it is fully supported when being held.
Once the baby is a little older it becomes a bit
easier to handle as it will have developed the
strength to hold up it's own head with increased
strength of the neck muscles and this will allow
the use of a baby carrier that both the mother
and the father can use.
Getting the father to help reduces the strain
that gets placed upon the mother's back from
constantly having to pick up and carry a young
child around.
With the baby held in an upright position and its
head draped across your shoulder it will in the
ideal position to rock it to sleep comfortably
while remain fully supported even when very young
and lacking in neck muscle strength.

Feb 24, 2008, Finances
One thing that is a big concern for many new parents is the additional expense that is involved with having a baby in the family.
The additional expenses can place more stress on parents who are trying to cope with big changes in their life and at the same time managing all this with possibly less sleep than they are accustomed to.
There are many things that need to be purchased to care for a new baby and these expenses will continue to mount as the child begins to grow.
Buying baby care products online can save a considerable amount of money and ease the financial burden as these online baby care stores are able to sell cheaper due to lower overheads and they usually are able to give you a far more comprehensive choice in virtually all areas of baby products.
Another online option that you can consider is to on sell items that you no longer need for your child on sites such as ebay that will help you to recover some of your previous expenditure freeing up funds for future purchases of necessities.
It certainly helps to engage some financial planning before the arrival of your child and after the birth and maintain a budget that will allow you to afford the necessities thereby reducing the additional burden of financial stress.
Good planning can save a lot of money while still allowing you to give your child the care that is required for a good healthy and happy upbringing.
The sooner you tackle any financial demands that you have the easier it will be in the future and the reduced stress levels will also help you to enjoy your child in a happier atmosphere.
Provided your child is getting the essentials then the most important thing at the end of the day is the time that you can give and the support that will mean more to your child than all the money in the world.
Feb 22, 2008, Diaper Rash
Diaper rash is something that you will have to deal with on a regular basis as it is just a part of life for a baby in the first year or so.
The most likely cause of diaper rash is from wetness where even the most absorbent nappies won't take all the moisture away from the skin.
As a baby's skin is very sensitive it doesn't take much to develop diaper rash.
The longer a baby is left in a damp diaper the more chance it will have of developing diaper rash.
This is only made worse when there is feces in the diaper as the bacteria from the stool will mix with the urine creating ammonia which is particularly harsh on a baby's skin.
Moisture in the diaper also makes chafing worse and as chafing is one of the reasons for diaper rash the combination of the two can make for a very unhappy child.
Once again cleanliness will help reduce the problem however even the detergents that you use to clean nappies can cause a reaction with your baby's skin and this can be another cause of diaper rash.
Chafing can be reduced by powders or the use or petroleum jelly but even some of the powders can cause sensitivities with some babies.
You can see how there are many different factors that need to be considered when trying to solve your baby's rashes.
A change of food for your child and in particular when moving to solids can also cause a problem as the composition of the stool will change and there is likely to be more stool movements which will necessitate diaper changes more often.
Because diapers are warm and moist the incidence of bacteria and yeast are increased and this can cause infections in the folds of the baby's skin.
Diaper rash can be anything from very mild where it will only appear as puffy or warm skin to more severe where the skin is red and irritated and causes your baby discomfort even when lightly touched.

Feb 15, 2008, Bottle Feeding Your Baby
Whether by necessity or choice you might decide that bottle feeding is best for you and your baby.
If that is the case then here are some tips worth considering ensuring that your baby's health is always well cared for.
Naturally when feeding your baby on formula you will need to read the instructions supplied with the formula and not deviate from the recommended procedure.
It is possible to reduce the degree of nutrition your baby will be getting if you start to alter the recommended mixtures.
Once you find a formula that your baby is happy with this will ensure that they will be getting their required daily nutritional needs as they will be more likely to have formula that they enjoy consuming. Some formulas can cause allergic reactions in babies and it might take a little while before you find the one that is suitable for your child.
Cleanliness is one of the most important factors that you need to consider when using formula and bottles will need to be properly cleaned at all times.
You should never refill a bottle that has been used with more formula until it has been properly cleaned as it is too risky for your child's health. Bacteria can form when old formula is left in a bottle.
Never share bottles that other mothers have been using with their children and don't mix formulas or dilute one formula with another.
Cow milk isn't recommended for younger children as it cannot be digested properly.
It is not until your child is approximately one year old before they can digest cow milk sufficiently to get the benefit of the nutrition that is available.
If you find that your baby isn't increasing in weight as normally expected consult with your doctor and see whether a different formula might be more suitable or if there are other factors that might be causing a deficiency in nutritional levels.
Another thing that can cause degradation in the nutritional quality of the formula is if you freeze it for use at a later date. This is something that should never be done.
Feb 12, 2008, Feeding Your Baby
The easiest way to feed your baby is also the best and that is by breast feeding. Some women do however experience some problems initially but with the right advice most will overcome these problems and find that breastfeeding is convenient as there is always a ready supply available for the baby whenever it is needed.
Breast milk is the best form of food that you can give your baby for maintaining good nutrition.
Some women are opposed to breast feeding for various different reasons but don't let any preconceived ideas or opinions from ill informed individuals affect your decision making.
It is acceptable to breast feed anywhere these days and that has made the decision for many women all the easier although some people still feel somewhat embarrassed to breastfeed in public places.
If breastfeeding causes any form of pain or discomfort discuss this with your medical professional and see if the problem can be resolved.
If there are ongoing problems then there might be no alternative than to use baby formula milk powders and bottle feeding.
Fortunately the formulas for babies have improved considerably over the years and you will be happy to know that babies will get excellent nutrition from baby formula.
There will be the added work of having to ensure complete cleanliness at all times with the baby's bottle and the need to have some way to warm the milk which makes it less convenient than breast milk but they are minor things that you will learn to deal with and plan for if you need to go places.
One of the biggest advantages of breast milk is the fact that it is always ready should the baby require feeding and initially this can be at any time of the day or night and you can imagine how much easier that will be if your baby wakes up in the early hours of the morning expecting to be fed.
Keep a watch on your baby's weight when breast feeding to ensure that it is getting enough nutrition to gain weight and if not talk to your doctor.

Feb 7, 2008, Mixed Emotions with a New Baby
It is not uncommon for you to have mixed emotions when your baby is born as there are many changes to your hormones during pregnancy and for many new mothers it can take some time before they feel a bond with their new baby.
You should not question your ability to be a good mother due to these emotions as it is something that many women experience.
Having an understanding partner or the help and support of friends and family will go a long way to help you get through this period should it happen to you.
On the other hand you will also have to attend to the needs of your newborn and having friends and family around too often can actually make it difficult for you to concentrate on developing a relationship with your baby.
A newborns senses and reflexes are surprising well developed right from the beginning of their life. In some circumstances where you and the baby are forced to be apart after childbirth, where there might be some additional care required by the hospital nursing staff and doctors in special care units, you will need time to be with your baby and start developing your bond.
It is a big change to your life to have a newborn baby and such a change can take time to get accustomed to so don't try to rush things along and always follow the advice of your doctor.
Once you start getting involved more in the care of your baby you might find that any strange emotions begin to subside and you will begin to feel the love that you expected towards your child.
You should always feel free to discuss anything that is concerning you and in particular your doctor and nurses as they are dealing with similar situations on a daily basis and it is better to listen to informed advice rather than the opinions of people who might not understand the situation.
Such feelings might not affect you whatsoever but it always good to know the facts in advance should this happen to you as you will be better able to deal with it.

Feb 6, 2008, Developing Proper Routines at Bedtime
The best way to make sure that you have a baby that sleeps well is to develop consistent routines that create good habits as this is the key to successful sleep patterns.
If your baby associates particular activities with sleep such as feeding, bathing and burping at the same times every day then it will become a lot easier for sleep to come naturally as you will be helping to develop the habit of sleep.
Other factors that will help to induce the right sleep patterns are for you to put your baby down for sleep in the same locations each day or night.
This is another way of developing habit patterns and it also makes it easier on the child as they will be in familiar surroundings when they awake each time.
Familiar sounds can also help to induce sleep and you should always make the lead up to sleep a calm and happy time for your baby as the results will be far more effective.
Once you settle on a pattern that seems to be working stick with it and try to improve upon the results that you get rather than jumping from one technique to another to get your baby to sleep as this will only add confusion and make sleep time more difficult.
The more that the same pattern is followed the more effective it will become and the easier it will be to get your baby off to sleep each night or even during the day if you develop patterns for daily naps.
You need to persevere with setting the scene for sleep as it will get easier the more you do it.
While it might seem a bit of an ordeal initially the benefits will far outweigh the time it takes finding the right balance in your child's pre-sleep regime.
